Why has ASEAN survived when many doubted it would? ASEAN is often criticised for being slow, loose, or ineffective. Yet, more than five decades on, it continues to endure in one of the world’s most diverse and complex regions. This essay argues that ASEAN’s survival is not accidental but the result of Realist pragmatism, where sovereignty, non-interference, and consensus matter more than deep legal integration.
